JADE: THE MYSTERIOUS AND MISUNDERSTOOD GEMSTONE
|

In modern times, Jade has been the most misrepresented stone in the jewelry business. Largely because of the unwillingness of Chinese Jade dealers to clue westerners in on the facts and wonders of Jade. Indeed, most layman and many of the tradespeople in the US and Europe believe whole-heartedly that so called "real Jade" is, strictly speaking, light green in color. This is, in fact, very far from the truth. While light apple green is a cherished color of Jade, it is not the only or even the most highly prized. Actually, it is the very dark, yet highly translucent green Jadeite, known as "fey dzwey" by the Chinese, that is the most expensive. Small, ring sized pieces of this dark, translucent Jade routinely sell for between 5,000 and 20,000 dollars!
Even more interesting to most people is the fact that Jade actually exists, and is also greatly appreciated, in several different primary colors and shades. They are: Green, Lavender, Red, Yellow, Bronze, Black, and White.
Like most gemstones, Jade is graded by factors, such as depth of color, clarity, translucency, and in the case of sculptured pieces, carving workmanship.
